H4.2, Spontaneous combustion.

  • IWIC H characteristic codes

    Spontaneous combustion

Use H4.2 when the material presents spontaneous combustion.

Waste that heats spontaneously in normal transport or on contact with air, then catches fire. A federal H characteristic code.

Is Federal H4.2 hazardous waste?

Not from this code alone. Federal H4.2 is one part of how hazardous waste and hazardous recyclable material are described. It names a characteristic, and federal status depends on the full evidence and on the definitions and exclusions in SOR/2021-25.

On a federally regulated international shipment, the applicant records the waste classification in the waste-line details of the federal notification in CNMTS. The movement rules and exclusions apply.

What does Federal H4.2 cover?

This covers material that heats up on its own in normal transport conditions, or when it meets air, and can then catch fire. It describes a fire mechanism, not just a combustible material. The material must be able to both heat and ignite.

Official wording
Any substance or waste that is liable to spontaneous heating under normal conditions encountered in transport or to heating up in contact with air, and is liable to catch fire. (Spontaneous combustion)

Is self-heating waste Federal H4.2 or another code?

CodeWhen it fits
H4.2The waste can heat on its own in normal transport or on contact with air, and can ignite.

Decide from where the material came from, how it was used, what is in it and the test results. A shared chemical or process word doesn't make 2 codes interchangeable. The full listed condition and any federal exclusion still decide.
