H4.1, Flammable solids.

  • IWIC H characteristic codes

    Flammable solids

Use H4.1 when the material presents flammable solids.

Combustible solids in transport, other than explosives, that catch fire readily or by friction. A federal H characteristic code.

Is Federal H4.1 hazardous waste?

Not from this code alone. Federal H4.1 is one part of how hazardous waste and hazardous recyclable material are described. It names a characteristic, and federal status depends on the full evidence and on the definitions and exclusions in SOR/2021-25.

On a federally regulated international shipment, the applicant records the waste classification in the waste-line details of the federal notification in CNMTS. The movement rules and exclusions apply.

What does Federal H4.1 cover?

This covers solids that burn easily, or that can start or feed a fire through friction, in transport conditions. Solids classed as explosives are outside it. It describes fire behaviour in transport, not where the material came from or how it will be disposed of.

Official wording
Solids or waste solids (other than those classed as explosives) that, under conditions encountered in transport, are readily combustible or may cause or contribute to fire through friction. (Flammable solids)

Is a flammable solid Federal H4.1 or another code?

CodeWhen it fits
H4.1In transport conditions, the non-explosive solid burns easily or can start or feed a fire through friction.

Decide from where the material came from, how it was used, what is in it and the test results. A shared chemical or process word doesn't make 2 codes interchangeable. The full listed condition and any federal exclusion still decide.
