H3, Flammable liquids.

  • IWIC H characteristic codes

    Flammable liquids

Use H3 when the material presents flammable liquids.

Liquids and liquid mixtures with flammable vapour at 60.5ºC or less (closed cup) or 65.6ºC (open cup). A federal H characteristic code.

Is Federal H3 hazardous waste?

Not from this code alone. Federal H3 is one part of how hazardous waste and hazardous recyclable material are described. It names a characteristic, and federal status depends on the full evidence and on the definitions and exclusions in SOR/2021-25.

On a federally regulated international shipment, the applicant records the waste classification in the waste-line details of the federal notification in CNMTS. The movement rules and exclusions apply.

What does Federal H3 cover?

This covers liquids, including mixtures and liquids with dissolved or suspended solids, that give off flammable vapour at 60.5°C or less in a closed-cup test, or 65.6°C or less in an open-cup test. Test results vary, and material already classed by another dangerous characteristic is left out.

Official wording
Liquids, mixtures of liquids and liquids containing solids in solution or suspension that give off a flammable vapour at temperatures of not more than 60.5ºC, for a closed-cup test, or not more than 65.6ºC for an open-cup test. (Since the results of open- and closed-cup tests are not strictly comparable and even individual results by the same test are often variable, regulations varying from the above figures to make allowance for such differences would be within the spirit of this description.) Includes paints, varnishes, lacquers, etc., but does not include any substance or waste that is otherwise classified on account of its dangerous characteristics. (Flammable liquids)

Is a flammable liquid Federal H3 or another code?

CodeWhen it fits
H3The liquid gives off flammable vapour in the closed-cup or open-cup test, and isn't excluded by another classification.

Decide from where the material came from, how it was used, what is in it and the test results. A shared chemical or process word doesn't make 2 codes interchangeable. The full listed condition and any federal exclusion still decide.
