U001, Acetaldehyde.

  • U-listed waste

    Acetaldehyde

U-list unused product.

U-listed hazardous waste for unused acetaldehyde, an ignitable chemical used to make resins. It is a flammable liquid.

Is U001 hazardous waste?

Yes, when the listing applies. U001 covers discarded, unused acetaldehyde, including off-specification product and qualifying residues. It is nonacute U-listed hazardous waste, not acute P-listed waste. The listing depends on the product and how it is discarded, not on a TCLP result alone.

The listing rests only on ignitability, corrosivity or reactivity. Under 261.3(g) it stops applying when the waste shows no hazardous-waste characteristic. Another listing can still apply, and land disposal restrictions can continue.

Where a hazardous waste manifest is required, put U001 in Item 13. For exceptions, use the VSQG exemptions and empty-container rules and pharmaceutical containers.

What does U001 cover?

This listing covers unused acetaldehyde discarded as pure or technical grade, or in a formulation where it is the only active ingredient. Off-specification batches, nonempty-container residues and spill cleanup residues from these products are included. Inactive ingredients don't stop the chemical counting as the sole active ingredient.

Is waste acetaldehyde always U001?

CodeWhen it fits
U001The unused chemical is discarded as pure or technical grade, or as the sole active ingredient. Qualifying product residues count too.
Characteristic waste (D001–D043)A used chemical or a different formulation shows a hazardous-waste characteristic. Any process listings that fit apply too.

A listed unused product can also show a characteristic, so more than one row can apply. Having this chemical somewhere in a manufacturing waste doesn't make the waste U001. Match the waste’s origin, formulation and use history. Mixing listed waste with solid waste, or treating it, generally doesn't remove the listing unless an exclusion, exception or approved delisting applies.
