U002, Acetone.

  • U-listed waste

    Acetone

U-list unused product.

Solvent drum with vapour, drawn for RCRA waste code U002, acetone. Flammable solvent in nail polish remover & paint thinner.
U-listed hazardous waste for unused acetone, an ignitable ketone solvent used in cleaners & thinners.

Is U002 hazardous waste?

Yes, when the listing applies. U002 covers discarded, unused acetone, including off-specification product and qualifying residues. It is nonacute U-listed hazardous waste, not acute P-listed waste. The listing depends on the product and how it is discarded, not on a TCLP result alone.

The listing rests only on ignitability, corrosivity or reactivity. Under 261.3(g) it stops applying when the waste shows no hazardous-waste characteristic. Another listing can still apply, and land disposal restrictions can continue.

Where a hazardous waste manifest is required, put U002 in Item 13. For exceptions, use the VSQG exemptions and empty-container rules and pharmaceutical containers.

What does U002 cover?

This listing covers unused acetone discarded as pure or technical grade, or in a formulation where it is the only active ingredient. Off-specification batches, nonempty-container residues and spill cleanup residues from these products are included. Inactive ingredients don't stop the chemical counting as the sole active ingredient.

Is waste acetone always U002?

CodeWhen it fits
U002The unused chemical is discarded as pure or technical grade, or as the sole active ingredient. Qualifying product residues count too.
F003It is spent after solvent use, alone or blended before use only with F003 solvents. Recovery still bottoms count.
F001–F005Before use, the blend held an F003 solvent plus at least 10% by volume of F001, F002, F004 or F005 solvents in total.
Characteristic waste (D001–D043)A used chemical or a different formulation shows a hazardous-waste characteristic. Any process listings that fit apply too.

A listed unused product can also show a characteristic, so more than one row can apply. Having this chemical somewhere in a manufacturing waste doesn't make the waste U002. Match the waste’s origin, formulation and use history. Mixing listed waste with solid waste, or treating it, generally doesn't remove the listing unless an exclusion, exception or approved delisting applies. Solvent use matters. Using the chemical as an ingredient or reactant doesn't by itself make it a spent F-listed solvent. Each F listing has its own before-use blend conditions.

Which wastes take U002?

WasteWhen it’s U002
Paint thinnerUnused thinner is discarded as a qualifying commercial chemical product with acetone as the sole active ingredient.
Solvent-contaminated wipesThe wipes hold unused acetone that meets U002.
Unused acetoneThe discarded commercial chemical product is pure or technical-grade acetone, or has acetone as its sole active ingredient.
