Alberta oilfield waste codes
empty containers
AER oilfield waste code.
Is Alberta EMTCON hazardous waste?
Not from the code alone. Alberta EMTCON is the AER oilfield-waste code for empty containers. The waste must come from the upstream facilities, wells or pipelines on that route. Having the code doesn’t make the waste dangerous oilfield waste.
Dangerous oilfield waste stays on the AER route within Alberta. It doesn’t use an Alberta hazardous-waste manifest unless it is exported from Alberta. Record the AER code in the oilfield waste information. A regulated export also needs the federal movement assessment, and a generic industrial category doesn’t replace the AER code.
What does Alberta EMTCON cover?
Empty aerosol cans, barrels or pails, sample bottles for crude oil, tubes for cutting oil, grease cartridges, drilling-mud sacks, paint cans or brushes, pipe-dope containers or brushes, and pesticide or herbicide containers. Alberta waste-manager guidance defines empty and triple-rinsed containers. The waste’s actual composition and properties still decide whether it is dangerous and how it is handled.
Are empty containers always Alberta EMTCON?
| Code | When it fits |
|---|---|
| EMTCON | The waste comes from the AER upstream oilfield route and the material matches this stream. |
Oilfield origin is part of the choice. Waste from an unrelated industrial activity doesn’t become oilfield waste because its material has a similar name.
