    naturally occurring radioactive materials

AER special-handling oilfield category.

Naturally occurring radioactive material from oil & gas equipment. Alberta lists it as an oilfield special-handling waste.

Is Alberta NORM hazardous waste?

Not from the code alone. Alberta NORM is naturally occurring radioactive materials in the AER oilfield-waste system. The waste must come from upstream facilities, wells or pipelines on that route. The code doesn’t say whether it is dangerous oilfield waste.

Dangerous oilfield waste stays on the AER route within Alberta and needs no Alberta hazardous-waste manifest unless it leaves Alberta. Record the AER code in the oilfield waste information. A regulated export also needs the federal movement assessment, and a generic industrial category doesn’t replace the AER code.

What does Alberta NORM cover?

Naturally occurring radioactive material that needs special handling. The Canadian NORM management guidelines also apply. The code names the stream for the AER system. Its actual composition and properties still decide whether it is dangerous and how it is handled.

Is naturally occurring radioactive materials always Alberta NORM?

CodeWhen it fits
NORMThe waste comes from the AER upstream oilfield route and is this material.

Origin matters. Waste from an unrelated industry doesn’t become oilfield waste because its material has a similar name.
