Alberta oilfield special-handling waste codes
polychlorinated biphenyls
AER special-handling oilfield category.
Is Alberta PCBWST hazardous waste?
Not from the code alone. Alberta PCBWST is polychlorinated biphenyls in the AER oilfield-waste system. The waste must come from upstream facilities, wells or pipelines on that route. The code doesn’t say whether it is dangerous oilfield waste.
Dangerous oilfield waste stays on the AER route within Alberta and needs no Alberta hazardous-waste manifest unless it leaves Alberta. Record the AER code in the oilfield waste information. A regulated export also needs the federal movement assessment, and a generic industrial category doesn’t replace the AER code.
What does Alberta PCBWST cover?
PCB material that needs special handling, including fluorescent-light ballasts, Askarel liquids and contaminated solids. Solids split into 50 to under 1,000 ppm and 1,000 ppm or above. Material above 50 ppm PCB by mass goes to an approved hazardous-waste disposal facility. The Waste Control Regulation and Alberta waste-manager guidance also apply. The code names the stream for the AER system. Its actual composition and properties still decide whether it is dangerous and how it is handled.
Is PCB waste always Alberta PCBWST?
| Code | When it fits |
|---|---|
| PCBWST | The waste comes from the AER upstream oilfield route and is this material. |
Origin matters. Waste from an unrelated industry doesn’t become oilfield waste because its material has a similar name.
