Basel List B codes
Spent solid catalysts with specified metals
Use B1120 for spent solid catalysts with specified metals as a Basel List B waste without an Annex III hazard.
Is Basel B1120 hazardous waste?
Not from the code alone. Basel B1120 is on Basel List B, so material that matches it is normally outside the Convention's hazardous definition. That changes if Annex I constituents give it an Annex III hazardous characteristic. SOR/2021-25, including its exclusions, decides Canadian federal control.
On a federally regulated international shipment, the applicant enters the waste classification in the waste line of the federal notification in CNMTS. The movement rules and exclusions still apply.
What does Basel B1120 cover?
Covers spent catalysts that contain a listed transition metal or lanthanide. Catalyst liquids are not covered. The transition metals are rhenium, tantalum, molybdenum, zirconium, zinc, nickel, iron, chromium, titanium, tungsten, hafnium, niobium, yttrium, copper, cobalt, manganese, vanadium and scandium. List A catalysts are excluded. The lanthanides are lutetium, thulium, holmium, terbium, europium, neodymium, cerium, ytterbium, erbium, dysprosium, gadolinium, samarium, praseodymium and lanthanum.

Is spent catalyst with metals Basel B1120?
| Code | When it fits |
|---|---|
| B1120 | Spent catalysts, but not catalyst liquids, that contain a listed transition metal or lanthanide. |
List B is conditional. It isn't an exemption label. If the material has an Annex III hazardous characteristic, or meets another Canadian or foreign hazardous-waste definition, classify the actual hazard and follow the movement rules that control.
