Ontario group: miscellaneous inorganic wastes and mixed wastes.
Is Ontario 142 hazardous waste?
Not from the code alone. Ontario 142 describes the waste stream, not whether it is hazardous. Ontario decides that from the hazardous characterization or liquid-industrial status, and from the exclusions. The 3-digit class needs a primary characterization letter to form the waste number.
For subject waste, the generator enters the class-and-letter waste number in the waste details of the Ontario hazardous waste manifest. Ontario’s exclusions and shipment rules also apply.
What does Ontario 142 cover?
Waste from primary lead, zinc or copper smelting. Examples are slurry, sludge or solids removed from a surface impoundment, sludge from a treatment plant, anode slime or residue after leaching, and dewatered solids from these sources.
Is lead, zinc or copper smelting waste Ontario 142 or another class?
| Code | When it fits |
|---|---|
| 142 | The stream is waste from primary lead, zinc or copper smelting. |
| 143 | The residue comes from steelmaking rather than primary lead, zinc or copper smelting. |
When several characterizations apply, the registration flowchart picks the primary one. A 3-digit class doesn't replace the flowchart or the exclusions.
Which wastes take Ontario 142?
| Waste | When it’s 142 |

| Slurry, sludge or solids removed from a surface impoundment | Which primary-smelting process produced it |
