Ontario inorganic wastes
Paint/pigment/coating waste
Ontario group: miscellaneous inorganic wastes and mixed wastes.
Is Ontario 145 hazardous waste?
Not from the code alone. Ontario 145 describes the waste stream, not whether it is hazardous. Ontario decides that from the hazardous characterization or liquid-industrial status, and from the exclusions. The 3-digit class needs a primary characterization letter to form the waste number.
For subject waste, the generator enters the class-and-letter waste number in the waste details of the Ontario hazardous waste manifest. Ontario’s exclusions and shipment rules also apply.
What does Ontario 145 cover?
Waste from applying paint, pigment or a coating goes here. That includes spray-booth waste, paper-coating residue and sludge from ink or paint. Waste from making inorganic pigments has its own class, so the process matters.
Is paint, pigment or coating waste Ontario 145 or another class?
| Code | When it fits |
|---|---|
| 145 | The stream is paint, pigment and coating residues from their use, including booth and ink sludge. |
| 141 | The waste comes from manufacturing inorganic pigments rather than applying the coating. |
The registration manual separates making inorganic pigment from later use of paint or coating. Keep the process history when choosing between these classes.
