Ontario ignitable, corrosive and reactive waste numbers
Reactive waste
Ontario’s reactive-waste characteristic.
Is Ontario D003 hazardous waste?
Yes, when the characteristic definition is met. Ontario D003 marks the reactive waste characteristic in the land-disposal system. Apply the definition and its test conditions, then the exclusions. The number marks the characteristic only. The waste’s 3-digit class and primary characterization stay separate.
For a subject-waste shipment, use the class-and-letter waste number in the waste details of the Ontario hazardous waste manifest. Put the hazardous-waste number in the land-disposal assessment and notification where one applies. Keep both identifiers, because neither replaces the other.
What does Ontario D003 cover?
The reactive-waste definition covers violent instability, specified detonation or explosive reactions, and dangerous reactions with water. Cyanide- or sulphide-bearing waste qualifies if it can release dangerous toxic gas, vapour or fumes between pH 2 and 12.5. TDG Class 1 explosive waste also falls in this characteristic.

Does reactive waste count as Ontario D003?
| Code | When it fits |
|---|---|
| D003 | The waste meets an instability, water-reactivity, toxic-gas or explosive route in Ontario’s reactive-waste definition. |
The prescribed test or definition sets the characteristic. A product hazard label or a material name alone doesn’t prove the waste result, and other hazardous criteria still need checking.
