What an inspection checklist includes

A user check is not a thorough examination. HSE’s L113 says pre-use checks are not the same as maintenance or thorough examination.

  • What is being inspected

The equipment or site, its ID and where it is.

  • The items, in walking order

Each checklist has its own list. Add the maker’s items in Edit.

  • Pass, fail or action

A tick for each item, with room for what was found.

  • Who inspected and when

A name and date, or a row for each shift or day on a weekly sheet.

  • Next due

When the next inspection falls, on the PUWER and harness checklists.

Inspection checklist questions

How often must work equipment be inspected?

At suitable intervals set by your risk assessment, and after exceptional circumstances. PUWER regulation 6 names no fixed interval, and not all work equipment needs a formal inspection.

What is the difference between an inspection and a thorough examination?

A thorough examination is done by a competent person independent of routine maintenance and ends in a report. LOLER regulation 9 sets at least every 6 months for lifting people and for accessories, and 12 months for other lifting equipment, or an examination scheme. Pre-use checks and inspections happen between examinations.

Who can inspect?

A competent person. For work equipment that is often your own employee, if they know what to look at, what to look for and what to do. See HSE’s L22.

How long should I keep the record?

Until the next inspection is recorded, for work equipment, ladders and harnesses. Keep driver defect reports for 15 months if you hold an operator licence.

Is my logo uploaded?

No. It is read and resized on this device and goes only into the files you download, or save to your own Drive or OneDrive. The last design, logo included, is kept in this browser for next time.
