Find a California waste code
Aerosol cans: empty or non-empty: 0 codes.
Aerosol cans: empty or non-empty
First check whether any contents or propellant remain. See aerosol can guidance.
Send a qualifying empty can to an accepting recycler or solid-waste facility. Non-empty hazardous cans go to an authorized universal-waste recipient when eligible; otherwise use full hazardous waste management.
Which California code fits aerosol cans, empty or non-empty?
Appendix XII has no dedicated aerosol-can entry. Classify the contents if a hazardous manifest is needed.
The classification and shipping rules still apply.
When is a California aerosol can empty?
The can must be emptied of contents and propellant as far as normal use allows. It can't qualify if it is RCRA-regulated or held acute or extremely hazardous waste.
Residue or a clogged nozzle means the can isn't empty. Use the hazardous route or the eligible universal-waste route.
Where can a qualifying empty California aerosol container go?
A qualifying empty container up to 5 gallons can go to an accepting solid-waste facility or recycler. Emptied household material or pesticide containers up to 5 gallons have the simpler 66261.7(k) exemption.
