    Spent pickling acid

Alberta Uniform Waste Code category.

Spent pickle liquor, the used acid from steel cleaning baths. Alberta inorganic waste category for metal pickling acid.

Is Alberta 111 hazardous waste?

Not from the code alone. Alberta 111 is an industrial category for spent pickling acid. A waste is hazardous only when it has a Schedule 1 property or listing and no Schedule 2 exclusion applies. The code number proves neither. Alberta treats a waste as corrosive when its pH is below 2.0 or above 12.5. A pH of exactly 2.0 or 12.5 doesn’t meet that test.

For regulated hazardous waste sent for disposal, the consignor enters the waste details on the Alberta hazardous waste manifest. Alberta’s exclusions and shipment rules apply as well.

What does Alberta 111 cover?

The industrial guide’s example is spent acid liquor from steel pickling, which carries iron salts in sulphuric or hydrochloric acid. Category 111 is the waste-category part of the code. The guide records transport identification, class and the treatment or recovery operation separately. Heavy-metal acid waste has its own category, 112, so they can overlap.

Is spent pickling acid Alberta 111 or 112?

CodeWhen it fits
111Waste liquor from pickling.
112An acidic liquid, sludge or residue holding heavy metals.

The guide has no rule on which code wins for spent pickling liquor that also holds heavy metals. Both can fit, so confirm the category you intend instead of assuming 111 or 112 always wins.
