    Aliphatic solvents (non-aromatic type)

Ontario group: non halogenated spent solvents.

Aliphatic solvents, spent non-aromatic solvents without benzene rings, in Ontario's group of non-halogenated spent solvents.

Is Ontario 212 hazardous waste?

Not from the code alone. Ontario 212 describes the waste stream, not whether it is hazardous. Ontario decides that from the hazardous characterization or liquid-industrial status, and from the exclusions. The 3-digit class needs a primary characterization letter to form the waste number.

For subject waste, the generator enters the class-and-letter waste number in the waste details of the Ontario hazardous waste manifest. Ontario’s exclusions and shipment rules also apply.

What does Ontario 212 cover?

This class covers aliphatic solvents and their residues. Examples are acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, alcohols and cyclohexane. Ontario keeps these apart from aromatic solvents and petroleum-distillate solvents. A mixture with enough halogenated organic material must use the halogenated solvent class, under the registration manual’s selection rule.

Is aliphatic solvent Ontario 212 or another class?

CodeWhen it fits
212The stream is spent aliphatic solvents and residues, including acetone and methyl ethyl ketone.
211The spent solvent is aromatic, such as benzene, toluene or xylene.
213The solvent is a petroleum distillate such as white spirits or Varsol.
241The waste stream contains at least 2% halogenated organic material by weight.

The solvent’s composition decides which class applies. Ontario’s 2% halogenated-organic rule can change the class of a mixed solvent stream, and a trade name alone doesn't show the composition.
