    Petroleum oil and sludge

Ontario group: oily wastes.

Petroleum oil & sludge, such as tank bottoms & oily sediment, in Ontario's group of oily wastes.

Is Ontario 251 hazardous waste?

Not from the code alone. Ontario 251 names the waste stream. Whether the waste is subject waste depends on its hazardous characterization or liquid-industrial status, and on the exclusions. The waste number also needs a primary characterization letter after the 3-digit class.

For subject waste, the generator enters the class-and-letter waste number in the waste details of the Ontario hazardous waste manifest. Ontario’s exclusions and shipment rules apply.

What does Ontario 251 cover?

Oily waste from petroleum, such as sludge from an oil-water separator, flotation skimmings, heavy-oil tank drainage, slop oil and emulsions. Crankcase lubricants and cutting-oil emulsions have their own classes. Oil bulked, blended or processed at a transfer or processing site can need the separate class for that.

Is petroleum oil and sludge Ontario 251 or another class?

CodeWhen it fits
251The stream is petroleum waste oil or sludge, including separator sludge, slop oil and emulsions.
252The waste comes from crankcase or other lubricating service.
253The stream is soluble, cutting or machine oil in the oil-emulsion class.
254Oil from class 251, 252 or 253 has been bulked, blended or processed at a waste transfer or processing site.

What the oil was used for, and how it was handled afterwards, separates these classes. Class 254 covers only the named oil classes after bulking, blending or processing at the waste site.
