Crankcase oil and lubricants
Ontario group: oily wastes.
Is Ontario 252 hazardous waste?
Not from the code alone. Ontario 252 names the waste stream. Whether the waste is subject waste depends on its hazardous characterization or liquid-industrial status, and on the exclusions. The waste number also needs a primary characterization letter after the 3-digit class.
For subject waste, the generator enters the class-and-letter waste number in the waste details of the Ontario hazardous waste manifest. Ontario’s exclusions and shipment rules apply.
What does Ontario 252 cover?
Used crankcase oils and lubricants, including service-station collections, industrial lubricants and bulk waste oil. The lubricating service it came from separates it from other petroleum sludge and from soluble cutting-oil emulsions. A transfer or processing site has a separate class for the oily streams it bulks, blends or processes.
Is crankcase oil and lubricant waste Ontario 252 or another class?
| Code | When it fits |
|---|---|
| 252 | The stream is used crankcase oil or lubricant from servicing or industrial use. |
| 251 | The waste is another petroleum oil or sludge, such as separator sludge or slop oil. |
| 253 | The stream is a soluble, cutting or machine-oil emulsion. |
| 254 | Oil from class 251, 252 or 253 has been bulked, blended or processed at a waste transfer or processing site. |
Ontario’s vehicle-servicing exclusion has conditions. It applies at a retail service facility where an approved or registered waste system manages the waste under a written agreement. It is not a blanket exemption for all used oil.
