Find a Texas waste code

Pick a waste or type one, and its Texas form codes show here.

A Texas waste code ends in 1 when the waste is Class 1, the most tightly managed nonhazardous industrial class.

Which Texas criteria make waste Class 1?

After the hazardous determination, check the state leachable-constituent limits and then the Class 1 criteria below.

CriterionClass 1 trigger
IgnitabilityLiquid flash point below 150°F (65.6°C), or the applicable solid-ignitability criterion.
CorrosivityApplicable liquid corrosivity, or solid/semi-solid pH at or below 2 or at or above 12.5 in an equal-weight water mixture.
CyanidesTotal recoverable cyanides at 20 mg/L or more.
AsbestosRegulated asbestos-containing material.
PCBs50 ppm or more in nonhazardous industrial waste.
PetroleumPetroleum classification and the TPH threshold.

The solid/semi-solid corrosivity rule has an exception for chemically bound material with no free liquids. Check that exception's conditions.

Which industrial wastes default to Class 1 in Texas?

Use the specific rules for empty containers and waste from outside Texas.

Waste from commercial production of a new chemical substance defaults to Class 1. To ask for Class 2 or 3, submit supporting data to TCEQ for concurrence.

If TCEQ hasn't concurred within 120 days, 335.508(8) lets you use the requested class, but only after 10 working days' written notice.

If the evidence can't support Class 2 or 3, manage the nonhazardous industrial waste as Class 1. This fallback can't replace the hazardous determination.

When does Texas Class 1 waste need the Uniform Hazardous Waste Manifest?

Texas requires that manifest for Class 1 industrial shipments under its rules, even though the waste is nonhazardous.

Check the quantity and controlled-property exemptions first. Recycling alone isn't a manifest exemption.

Follow the Item 13 instructions for the full Texas code. Add EPA codes only when they apply, and keep the nonhazardous determination and proof that the destination accepts the waste.
