Miscellaneous
Manifested treated wood waste
The treated wood is shipped under hazardous waste manifest requirements.
Is California code 614 hazardous waste?
Not from the code alone. Work out the preservative hazards and whether the wood is RCRA or non-RCRA (California-only) hazardous waste. Code 614 isn't restricted. Eligible non-RCRA wood that is hazardous only because of a registered preservative can follow the treated-wood alternative management standards. That means a shipment record and an authorized destination instead of a hazardous waste manifest. Qualifying utility-service wood has a separate statutory route.
If those routes don't apply and a shipment needs the Uniform Hazardous Waste Manifest, enter 614 in Item 13 as the California code. A restricted code that fits wins. Add the federal codes for RCRA hazardous wood.
RCRA waste meets a federal listing or characteristic and has no federal exclusion. Non-RCRA waste is hazardous under California rules only. California presumes hazardous waste is RCRA unless the generator shows it isn't, so keep that record.
What does California code 614 cover?
This entry is treated wood waste shipped under hazardous waste manifest rules. Appendix XII and DTSC's 2017 manifest guidance both list code 614. You still need to classify the preservative hazards, the federal status and eligibility for California's alternative standards.

Is treated wood waste California code 614, or a shipment record?
| Code | When it fits |
|---|---|
| 614 | The treated wood must ship under hazardous waste manifest rules. |
| Treated-wood shipment record | Eligible non-RCRA wood follows California's alternative management standards and goes to an authorized facility. |
| No hazardous waste code | A specific exclusion applies and no other federal or California hazard remains. |
Both Appendix XII and DTSC's 2017 guidance list 614, so eligibility for the alternative standards decides whether you use a manifest.
What do you check before using California code 614?
First test whether the wood is eligible for California's alternative management standards. Eligible non-RCRA treated wood goes to an authorized destination with a shipment record, not under a hazardous waste manifest.
Wood with another hazard, or wood that is RCRA hazardous waste, can't use that route. Qualifying utility-service wood can have a separate statutory route.
Which wastes take California code 614?
| Waste | When it’s 614 |
|---|---|
| Treated wood waste | The hazardous treated wood needs a manifest because no alternative management or exclusion route applies |
