Miscellaneous
Small hazardous-waste container
The container holds less than 30 gallons and still requires hazardous waste management.
Is California code 513 hazardous waste?
Not from the code alone. Waste must first be found hazardous. Code 513 isn't a restricted code, but a restricted category that fits takes priority over it. A code that isn't restricted doesn't make waste non-hazardous.
When a shipment needs the Uniform Hazardous Waste Manifest, enter 513 in Item 13 for the waste line. Use one California code, plus the federal RCRA codes when the waste is federally hazardous.
RCRA waste meets a federal listing or characteristic, with no federal exclusion that applies. Non-RCRA waste is hazardous under California rules only. California presumes hazardous waste is RCRA unless the generator shows it isn't, so keep that determination.
What does California code 513 cover?
This code is for containers under 30 gallons that still need hazardous waste management after the empty-container rules are applied. Capacity doesn't replace the residue, former-contents and handling conditions that decide whether a container is exempt in the first place.

Is a discarded container California code 513?
| Code | When it fits |
|---|---|
| 513 | The emptied container is under 30 gallons and still requires hazardous waste management. |
| 511 | The emptied container held pesticide, has capacity of at least 30 gallons and is not exempt. |
| 512 | The emptied container held material other than pesticide, has capacity of at least 30 gallons and is not exempt. |
| Empty-container exemption | The container meets every applicable residue, former-contents and management condition in the empty-container rule. |
No pourable residue may remain in any orientation, and normal physical methods must remove nonpourable residue. Containers that held acute or extremely hazardous material need triple rinsing or an approved equivalent. Absorbed contamination can prevent exemption. Assess the California exemption and federal empty-container status separately.
