D042, 2,4,6-Trichlorophenol.

  • Characteristic hazardous waste

    2,4,6-Trichlorophenol

2,4,6-Trichlorophenol at 2 mg/L or more in the TCLP extract.

Toxic characteristic waste. Waste with 2,4,6-trichlorophenol at 2 mg/L or more in the TCLP test. A biocide chemical.

Is D042 hazardous waste?

Yes. D042 is hazardous waste when the TCLP extract of a representative sample holds 2,4,6-trichlorophenol at 2 mg/L or more. That makes it toxic hazardous waste, whatever industry or process it came from.

Compare the 2,4,6-trichlorophenol in the TCLP extract with 2 mg/L. A total 2,4,6-trichlorophenol result is a different measure, so it can't be compared with this limit.

D042 is a nonacute characteristic. On a required hazardous waste manifest, put D042 in Item 13. See VSQG exemptions and empty-container rules.

What does D042 cover?

D042 applies when the TCLP extract of a representative waste sample holds 2,4,6-trichlorophenol at 2 mg/L or more. The limit is for the extract, not the waste’s total 2,4,6-trichlorophenol.

Is 2,4,6-trichlorophenol waste always D042?

CodeWhen it fits
D042A representative sample’s TCLP extract contains 2,4,6-trichlorophenol at or above 2 mg/L.
D004–D043The 2,4,6-trichlorophenol result is below 2 mg/L. Another contaminant or characteristic may still apply.

Generators decide the codes from testing or knowledge of the waste, under 40 CFR 262.11. A result below 2 mg/L rules out D042 only. It doesn't make the waste nonhazardous.
