D043, Vinyl chloride.

  • Characteristic hazardous waste

    Vinyl chloride

Vinyl chloride at 0.2 mg/L or more in the TCLP extract.

Toxic characteristic waste. Waste with vinyl chloride at 0.2 mg/L or more in the TCLP test. It is the gas used to make PVC.

Is D043 hazardous waste?

Yes. D043 is hazardous waste when the TCLP extract of a representative sample holds vinyl chloride at 0.2 mg/L or more. That makes it toxic hazardous waste, whatever industry or process it came from.

Compare the vinyl chloride in the TCLP extract with 0.2 mg/L. A total vinyl chloride result is a different measure, so it can't be compared with this limit.

D043 is a nonacute characteristic. On a required hazardous waste manifest, put D043 in Item 13. See VSQG exemptions and empty-container rules.

What does D043 cover?

D043 applies when the TCLP extract of a representative waste sample holds vinyl chloride at 0.2 mg/L or more. The limit is for the extract, not the waste’s total vinyl chloride.

Is vinyl chloride waste always D043?

CodeWhen it fits
D043A representative sample’s TCLP extract contains vinyl chloride at or above 0.2 mg/L.
D004–D043The vinyl chloride result is below 0.2 mg/L. Another contaminant or characteristic may still apply.
U043Unused vinyl chloride is discarded pure, technical grade, or as the product’s sole active ingredient.

Generators decide the codes from testing or knowledge of the waste, under 40 CFR 262.11. A result below 0.2 mg/L rules out D043 only. It doesn't make the waste nonhazardous.

Which wastes take D043?

WasteWhen it’s D043
Contaminated soilVinyl chloride leaching from contaminated soil reaches the TCLP limit
Solvent-contaminated wipesVinyl chloride leaching from solvent-contaminated wipes reaches the TCLP limit
