Metal dust and machining waste
Hazardous metal dust containing a metal listed in code 121, or hazardous machining waste.
Is California code 172 hazardous waste?
Not from the code alone. The material must first be determined hazardous. California code 172 is not restricted, and a restricted code takes priority over it. A non-restricted code doesn't make a waste non-hazardous.
If the shipment needs the Uniform Hazardous Waste Manifest, enter 172 in Item 13 for the waste line. Use one California code, plus any federal RCRA codes when the waste is federally hazardous.
Waste is RCRA waste when it meets a federal listing or characteristic and no federal exclusion applies. Non-RCRA waste is hazardous under California rules only. California presumes hazardous waste is RCRA unless the generator shows it isn't, so keep that determination.
What does California code 172 cover?
This is for hazardous metal dust holding a metal named under code 121, and for hazardous machining waste. The machining source counts as well as dust form. Metal-bearing sludge has its own code.

Is metal dust or machining waste California code 172?
| Code | When it fits |
|---|---|
| 172 | Metal dust holding a listed metal, or hazardous machining waste. |
| 171 | The hazardous sludge holds a metal listed under code 121. |
| 181 | The hazardous inorganic solid fits no named metal or other specific inorganic code. |
Physical form and the machining source decide between dust and sludge. Metal content alone doesn't.
Which wastes take California code 172?
| Waste | When it’s 172 |
|---|---|
| Metal dust | Analysis finds a listed metal in dry particles. |
| Machining waste | The residue came from cutting, turning or another metal-machining operation. |
| Antimony-bearing waste | Antimony is in dry dust or machining residue. |
| Arsenic-bearing waste | Arsenic is in dry dust or machining residue. |
| Barium-bearing waste | Barium is in dry dust or machining residue. |
| Beryllium-bearing waste | Beryllium is in dry dust or machining residue. |
| Cadmium-bearing waste | Cadmium is in dry dust or machining residue. |
| Chromium-bearing waste | Chromium is in dry dust or machining residue. |

| 133 | High-organic water-based liquid |
| 134 | Low-organic water-based liquid |
| 135 | Other water-based hazardous liquid |
| 141 | Unused inorganic material |
| 151 | Friable or powdered asbestos |
| 161 | Used oil-refinery cracking catalyst |
