Organics
Other solvent mixture
Hazardous solvent mixture that does not fit a specific solvent entry.
Is California code 214 hazardous waste?
Not from the code alone. The material must first be determined hazardous. California code 214 is not restricted, and a restricted code takes priority over it. A non-restricted code doesn't make a waste non-hazardous.
If the shipment needs the Uniform Hazardous Waste Manifest, enter 214 in Item 13 for the waste line. Use one California code, plus any federal RCRA codes when the waste is federally hazardous.
Waste is RCRA waste when it meets a federal listing or characteristic and no federal exclusion applies. Non-RCRA waste is hazardous under California rules only. California presumes hazardous waste is RCRA unless the generator shows it isn't, so keep that determination.
What does California code 214 cover?
This is the fallback solvent-mixture code. Use it after checking whether the hazardous blend belongs to the halogenated, oxygenated or hydrocarbon groups. Several ingredients don't make a mixture 214 on their own. First identify the chemicals, their function and any restricted limits.

Is a solvent mixture California code 214?
| Code | When it fits |
|---|---|
| 214 | The hazardous solvent mixture can't be placed in a named solvent chemistry group. |
| 211 | The solvent is halogenated and no restricted code applies. |
| 212 | The solvent is oxygenated, such as acetone, butanol or ethyl acetate. |
| 213 | The solvent is a hydrocarbon, such as benzene, hexane or Stoddard solvent. |
| 741 | The hazardous liquid holds at least 1,000 mg/L total halogenated organic compounds. |
The regulations give no percentage rule for a blend that spans chemistry groups. Get its composition and confirm any unresolved overlap, rather than picking the code of the largest ingredient or the lowest number. A restricted code takes priority.
Which wastes take California code 214?
| Waste | When it’s 214 |
|---|---|
| Paint waste | Solvent was separated from the paint and the blend fits no specific solvent class. |
| Spent solvent | The blend fits none of the 3 specific solvent classes. |
| Toluene waste | The toluene blend fits none of the specific solvent classes. |
Which codes sit beside California code 214?
| Code | What it is |
|---|---|
| 221 | Waste oil and mixed oil |
| 222 | Oil-water separator sludge |
| 223 | Other oily hazardous waste |
| 231 | Pesticide rinse water |
| 232 | Pesticide and pesticide-production waste |
| 241 | Tank-bottom waste |
| 251 | Still bottoms with halogenated organics |
| 252 | Other still-bottom waste |
