Unreacted resin and monomers
Monomers are starting molecules that can join to make polymers; this entry includes resin that has not polymerized.
Is California code 271 hazardous waste?
Not from the code alone. Waste must first be found hazardous. Code 271 isn't a restricted code, but a restricted category that fits takes priority over it. A code that isn't restricted doesn't make waste non-hazardous.
When a shipment needs the Uniform Hazardous Waste Manifest, enter 271 in Item 13 for the waste line. Use one California code, plus the federal RCRA codes when the waste is federally hazardous.
RCRA waste meets a federal listing or characteristic, with no federal exclusion that applies. Non-RCRA waste is hazardous under California rules only. California presumes hazardous waste is RCRA unless the generator shows it isn't, so keep that determination.
What does California code 271 cover?
This code is for hazardous organic monomer waste, including resin that hasn't polymerized. It means the starting molecules or unreacted resin, not waste made of polymeric resin after the reaction.

Is resin waste California code 271, 272 or 281?
| Code | When it fits |
|---|---|
| 271 | The waste is an organic monomer or resin that has not polymerized. |
| 272 | The hazardous resin waste is polymeric because polymerization has occurred. |
| 281 | The discarded hazardous material is an adhesive rather than resin sorted by polymerization state. |
Formulation and process records show whether polymerization happened.
Which wastes take California code 271?
| Waste | When it’s 271 |
|---|---|
| Unreacted resin and monomer waste | Product or cure records show monomer or resin remains unreacted |
Which codes sit beside California code 271?
| Code | What it is |
|---|---|
| 232 | Pesticide and pesticide-production waste |
| 241 | Tank-bottom waste |
| 251 | Still bottoms with halogenated organics |
| 252 | Other still-bottom waste |
| 261 | PCB-containing material |
| 291 | Discarded latex material |
| 311 | Discarded pharmaceuticals |
| 321 | Hazardous sewage sludge |
