Lead and lead compounds
WA category D220; load type and road-transport rules decide whether a tracking form follows.
Is WA D220 hazardous waste?
Not from the code alone. D220 is a WA controlled-waste category. Regulation 3 covers industrial, commercial, medical, laboratory and sewage-treatment waste. Domestic waste is outside it. Waste that a Class I, II or III landfill can lawfully accept is excluded, apart from specified exceptions such as asbestos, tyres and clinical waste.
For a tracked load, enter D220 in the controlled-waste category field on the DWER tracking form. DWER issues the number. The authorised carrier or driver records collection and transport, and the receiving facility closes the record. Record the holder, amount, containment and destination. The WA load thresholds and exclusions still apply.
What does WA D220 cover?
Lead metal and lead compounds fall here. That includes the element itself, not just one named compound or process.

Is lead waste WA D220 or WA D221?
| Code | When it fits |
|---|---|
| D220 | The waste holds lead metal or a lead compound. |
| D221 | The discarded material is a used lead-acid battery. |
Landfill acceptance turns on the landfill criteria, not on how the waste looks. A category number and a dangerous goods class answer different questions.
Which wastes take WA D220?
| Waste | When it’s D220 |
|---|---|
| Lead compound waste | Analysis or process knowledge shows lead compound in the discarded waste. |
| Lead paint waste | The debris or residue contains lead from stripped or removed paint. |
