Which waste code covers empty contaminated chemical drums?
The controlled-container entries concern residues, not whether the drum looks empty. Victoria separates rigid steel or plastic containers below 200 litres (N100) from those at or above 200 litres (N105), with other bags or containers in N110.
Can a contaminated drum be coded as clean metal or plastic?
Match the residue to the state’s contaminated-container description before considering an ordinary material entry. PFAS-contaminated containers can fall under a dedicated PFAS entry. Keep the former contents in the written waste description.
Which exclusions or special routes apply to contaminated drum waste codes?
Interstate movements. A container with only a small residue is outside the NEPM movement rules when it goes directly for refilling with the same substance. Being empty doesn’t qualify a discarded or contaminated container.
South Australia. Regional drumMUSTER sites accept eligible agricultural and veterinary chemical drums, and South Australian guidance points to sites for 20 litre drums. Check the scheme’s preparation and acceptance conditions.
Australian Capital Territory. Empty eligible agricultural and veterinary chemical containers can go to the drumMUSTER collection at Mitchell by appointment, under the scheme’s preparation and acceptance conditions.
The shared classification and movement limits for contaminated drum waste codes are on the Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania, Australian Capital Territory and Northern Territory pages.
What do you do next with contaminated drum waste codes?
For chemical drums, record the former contents and residue. Then choose between same-substance refill, an accepted drum scheme, decontamination and controlled-waste movement.
