Treated timber

  • Victoria

    Hazard-treated timber and sawdust

Victoria: Timber has been treated with hazardous preservatives or coatings.

    When to use K310-H
Victoria uses K310-H for posts, decking, timber & sawdust treated with hazardous preservatives or coatings.

Which Victorian waste code covers treated timber?

K310-H covers timber, including sawdust, treated with hazardous substances. K310-NH covers untreated timber. EPA’s treated-timber guidance includes timber treated, coated or chemically altered with preservatives, paint, varnish or fumigants. Heat treatment alone is excluded.

Can treated timber go into mulch or an inert landfill?

In Victoria, only untreated timber waste can go on land as sawdust or mulch. Don’t send treated timber to a solid inert waste landfill. Oil-borne preservatives such as creosote need a further assessment of the disposal route.

Which exclusions or special routes apply to treated timber waste codes?

Interstate movements. Treated timber is not automatically controlled waste under the NEPM. Use a listed category only where the timber waste also meets the category and hazardous-characteristic test.

Victoria. Municipal waste landfills can accept construction, fencing, flooring, decking and furniture timber treated with water-based or light organic solvent preservatives as industrial waste. That route excludes oil-borne preservatives such as creosote, which need further disposal assessment. Treated timber must not go to a solid inert landfill or onto land as mulch or sawdust. Heat treatment alone is not chemical treatment.

New South Wales. NSW pre-classifies CCA-treated timber as general solid waste (non-putrescible). Confirm acceptance with the landfill. Burning, contaminated ash and other treatments need separate assessment. CCA treatment alone doesn’t bring an industrial controlled-waste code.

Queensland. Schedule 9 Part 3 Division 1 item 11 excludes treated timber, except sawdust and shavings. Don’t assign a regulated-waste code to an intact treated fence or demolition timber just because it holds preservative.

Tasmania. Treated timber is outside the clean-fill route. Don’t use the clean-fill approved management method for a load containing timber or controlled contaminants.

The shared classification and movement limits for treated timber waste codes are on the Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania, Australian Capital Territory and Northern Territory pages.
