Which waste code covers asbestos sheets?
N220 is the asbestos waste entry in the state lists. In Victoria, soil containing asbestos is N120, not N220. Work out whether the load is asbestos-containing material, contaminated soil or both before choosing the entry.
How do you classify asbestos-contaminated soil?
In Victoria, soil containing asbestos only is a separate disposal category. Other contamination can put the soil in Category A, B, C or D. A disposal category and a waste code answer different questions.
Which exclusions or special routes apply to asbestos waste codes?
Victoria. A homeowner moving their own domestic asbestos in their own vehicle uses an authorised asbestos landfill and the household handling guidance, not the business Waste Tracker route. Book with the landfill first. Contractor and business asbestos remains industrial waste. Don’t place asbestos in general, recycling or green-waste bins.
New South Wales. Within NSW, cl 79 reporting applies at 100 kg or more of asbestos waste or 10 m² or more of asbestos sheeting per load. Use IWTS for business movements. A resident personally moving their own asbestos uses the EPA householder reporting route, and a paid contractor uses the business route. Below the reporting thresholds, cl 78 packaging and safe transport still apply. Interstate movement has the Part 4 route where applicable.
Queensland. Current tests must meet all the non-regulated requirements, and Schedule 9 Part 3 Division 2 requires asbestos above 0.01% by weight to be absent. That test-out is not approval to dispose of asbestos as clean rubble. Schedule 2 s 57 excludes transport of no more than 175 kg of asbestos from that licensed activity. Section 71 excludes only non-commercial loads below 250 kg from tracking, so a small commercial load can still need tracking.
Western Australia. Under r 3(5), only the Part 3 Division 6 asbestos transport and disposal controls and r 53 apply. Asbestos needs no controlled-waste tracking form. Wrap and label it, keep it separate and deliver it to an authorised asbestos disposal facility.
Tasmania. Asbestos is controlled waste and is excluded from the clean-fill route. Usual domestic handling can fall outside the general handling approval, but transport and disposal still need the asbestos and controlled-waste routes.
Australian Capital Territory. ACT asbestos waste has its own packaging, transport and disposal requirements. It is handled as industrial waste, and interstate movement also uses the Controlled Waste NEPM route.
Northern Territory. A commercial or fee-for-service asbestos transporter needs the listed-waste licence route. Household acceptance differs by council. In Darwin, Shoal Bay requires an application before accepting soil or asbestos.
The shared classification and movement limits for asbestos waste codes are on the Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania, Australian Capital Territory and Northern Territory pages.
What do you do next with asbestos waste codes?
For asbestos, decide whether the load is material, sheeting or contaminated soil. Then use the asbestos route and thresholds on the state page before booking an authorised receiver.
