N220, Asbestos waste.
Northern Territory
Asbestos waste
NT 2013 table entry N220; confirm that the current system still accepts it before use.
Is NT N220 hazardous waste?
Not from the code alone. The code is an administrative description, not the statutory listed-waste test. NT licensing for listed-waste activities generally covers commercial work or services done for a fee. So the waste, the activity and the licence conditions all matter.
Every controlled-waste movement into or out of the NT needs a consignment authorisation and Waste Transfer Certificate. The certificate's waste-code field takes the accepted code with a description. The November 2024 guide makes online tracking within the NT voluntary, but licensed operators still keep records and report volumes under their licence conditions.
For a controlled border movement, enter the accepted code in the certificate's waste-code field. Then check the NT code currency and movement rules.
What does NT N220 cover?
Asbestos waste and discarded asbestos-containing material go here. Each state sets the boundary and generally treats any material that holds asbestos fibres, soil included, as asbestos-containing. Victoria separately gives asbestos-bearing soil the N120 description.

Is asbestos waste always NT N220?
| Code | When it fits |
|---|---|
| N220 | The state's rules class the material as asbestos waste. |
The older table helps you recognise a description. It doesn't show that the portal accepts the code today, or what an operator's licence now says. Get the movement approval before dispatch.
