Find an Australian waste code

Pick a waste or type one, and each state’s codes for it show here.

What are Australian controlled waste codes?

A100-style numbers identify entries in administrative and state catalogues. The NEPM itself lists waste categories and hazardous characteristics without those numbers. Listed wastes are considered to have a listed characteristic unless the destination agency is satisfied otherwise. State rules determine classification, tracking and disposal.

Are waste codes the same in every Australian state?

No. Victoria has industrial-material codes and hazardous/non-hazardous mirror suffixes. WA has battery-specific categories. Tasmania adds DEADF for finfish mortalities. A shared number can have different wording, so every code page names its catalogue.

How do you find a code for the waste in front of you?

Choose the state where the movement starts, then search the material or process. Read the candidate’s origin, constituents, exclusions and test conditions. Identify destination and receiving approval separately. For mixed building waste, identify the components rather than importing a UK EWC code.

Which national exclusions affect an interstate movement?

The Controlled Waste NEPM governs interstate and interterritory movement, not movements wholly within one state or territory. A listed category is controlled only when it has a listed hazardous characteristic, although the destination agency may require evidence to displace the presumption. The measure excludes emergencies, approved analysis or research, pipelines, residual containers returned for refilling with the same substance, qualifying approved farm-chemical collections and authorised product recalls. Direct reuse, approved producer-responsibility and approved recycling exemptions exist only when the affected jurisdictions formalise them in writing.

For contaminated drums and containers, read the material page with this interstate rule.

For e-waste, read the material page with this interstate rule.

Pesticide and biocide waste. Unwanted farm chemicals are outside the NEPM movement rules only when a farmer or property owner moves them without fee or reward to a designated collection place under an approved scheme.

Surface-treatment waste. A category match is not enough by itself: the waste must also have a List 2 hazardous characteristic, subject to the destination agency’s presumption and evidence requirements.

For treated timber, read the material page with this interstate rule.

Which document needs an Australian waste code?

The code goes into the state’s movement record where tracking applies. Victoria uses Waste Tracker; NSW uses IWTS; Queensland uses a waste transport certificate. For a controlled-waste border movement, obtain destination approval before dispatch. Read the state rules.
