J120, Oil-and-water mixtures.
Northern Territory
Oil-and-water mixtures
Northern Territory J120: use for an emulsion or mixture of water with oil or another hydrocarbon.
Is NT J120 hazardous waste?
Not from the code alone. The code is an administrative description, not the statutory listed-waste test. NT licensing for listed-waste activities generally covers commercial work or services done for a fee. So the waste, the activity and the licence conditions all matter.
Every controlled-waste movement into or out of the NT needs a consignment authorisation and Waste Transfer Certificate. The certificate's waste-code field takes the accepted code with a description. The November 2024 guide makes online tracking within the NT voluntary, but licensed operators still keep records and report volumes under their licence conditions.
For a controlled border movement, enter the accepted code in the certificate's waste-code field. Then check the NT code currency and movement rules.
What does NT J120 cover?
Waste oil mixed or emulsified with water goes here, and so do water mixtures with other hydrocarbons. Water in the mixture is what sets it apart from plain waste oil.

Is oily water NT J120 or NT J100?
| Code | When it fits |
|---|---|
| J120 | Oil or another hydrocarbon is mixed or emulsified with water. |
| J100 | The waste is plain mineral oil, which fits J100. |
The older table helps you recognise a description. It doesn't show that the portal accepts the code today, or what an operator's licence now says. Get the movement approval before dispatch.
