Is contaminated soil always waste code N120?
Victoria uses N120 for soil above the fill-material limits or containing asbestos. The number doesn’t settle the disposal category. Read the state’s soil entry and don’t carry a classification over from another state.
What evidence decides a contaminated soil classification?
For Victorian waste soil, use site history and representative sampling to identify the contaminants known or reasonably expected. Priority waste soil also needs a disposal category. Colour, smell and the phrase clean fill don’t establish that category.
Which exclusions or special routes apply to contaminated soil waste codes?
Tasmania. Contaminated soil is not clean fill. Tasmania assesses its classification and disposal route using the EPA contaminated-soil criteria and can require an individual approval.
Australian Capital Territory. In the ACT, assess contaminated soil and establish its classification. Get EPA approval before disposing of or beneficially reusing contaminated soil, or soil from a site that might be contaminated. Landfill disposal also needs the ACT approval form.
Northern Territory. Contaminated soil is listed waste when it contains a listed waste. Don’t use the inert-material reclamation exception for it. In Darwin, Shoal Bay requires an application before accepting soil.
The shared classification and movement limits for contaminated soil waste codes are on the Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania, Australian Capital Territory and Northern Territory pages.
What do you do next with contaminated soil waste codes?
For contaminated soil, keep the sampling and site-history evidence with the load decision, get any soil disposal approval, and confirm the receiving facility before transport.
