Northern Territory
Contaminated soil
Northern Territory N120: identify the controlled waste or other contaminant that makes the soil fit this entry.
Is NT N120 hazardous waste?
Not from the code alone. The code is an administrative description, not the statutory listed-waste test. NT licensing for listed-waste activities generally covers commercial work or services done for a fee. So the waste, the activity and the licence conditions all matter.
Every controlled-waste movement into or out of the NT needs a consignment authorisation and Waste Transfer Certificate. The certificate's waste-code field takes the accepted code with a description. The November 2024 guide makes online tracking within the NT voluntary, but licensed operators still keep records and report volumes under their licence conditions.
For a controlled border movement, enter the accepted code in the certificate's waste-code field. Then check the NT code currency and movement rules.
What does NT N120 cover?
Soil contaminated with controlled waste. The contaminant must be controlled waste or another substance on the Northern Territory’s list.

Is contaminated soil always NT N120?
| Code | When it fits |
|---|---|
| N120 | The soil holds a controlled waste or a listed contaminant. |
The older table helps you recognise a description. It doesn't show that the portal accepts the code today, or what an operator's licence now says. Get the movement approval before dispatch.
