Oil-and-water mixtures
Western Australia J120: use for an emulsion or mixture of water with oil or another hydrocarbon.
Is WA J120 hazardous waste?
Not from the code alone. J120 is a WA controlled-waste category. Regulation 3 covers industrial, commercial, medical, laboratory and sewage-treatment waste, but not domestic waste. Waste lawfully accepted at a Class I, II or III landfill is excluded, except for specified items including asbestos, tyres and clinical waste.
For a tracked load, enter J120 in the controlled-waste category field on the DWER tracking form. DWER issues the number. The authorised carrier or driver records collection and transport, and the receiving facility closes the record. Record the holder, amount, containment and destination. Road tracking in WA follows the WA load thresholds and exclusions.
What does WA J120 cover?
Waste oil mixed or emulsified with water falls here, and so do mixtures of water and other hydrocarbons. The water is what separates this entry from a waste-oil entry that doesn't mention water.

Is an oil-and-water mixture WA J120 or J100?
| Code | When it fits |
|---|---|
| J120 | Oil or another hydrocarbon is mixed or emulsified with water. |
| J100 | The waste matches the J100 description of waste mineral oil. |
Landfill acceptance depends on the landfill criteria, not on how the waste looks. A category number and a dangerous goods class answer different questions.
Which wastes take WA J120?
