Tarry refining and treatment residue
Western Australia J160: the tarry residue must arise from refining, distillation or heat-driven decomposition.
Is WA J160 hazardous waste?
Not from the code alone. J160 is a WA controlled-waste category. Regulation 3 covers industrial, commercial, medical, laboratory and sewage-treatment waste, but not domestic waste. Waste lawfully accepted at a Class I, II or III landfill is excluded, except for specified items including asbestos, tyres and clinical waste.
For a tracked load, enter J160 in the controlled-waste category field on the DWER tracking form. DWER issues the number. The authorised carrier or driver records collection and transport, and the receiving facility closes the record. Record the holder, amount, containment and destination. Road tracking in WA follows the WA load thresholds and exclusions.
What does WA J160 cover?
Tarry residue from refining, distillation or pyrolytic treatment falls here. It needs both the tar and the process, so other tar waste doesn't fit by name alone.

Landfill acceptance depends on the landfill criteria, not on how the waste looks. A category number and a dangerous goods class answer different questions.
