Tarry refining and treatment residue
Queensland J160: the tarry residue must arise from refining, distillation or heat-driven decomposition.
Is Queensland J160 hazardous waste?
Not from the code alone. J160 is a Schedule 11 trackable-waste description. A load is tracked while the commercial or industrial waste stays regulated under section 42. Check the Schedule 9 exclusions and the section 42(4) test-out route first, as they decide whether a movement is trackable. J160 has no precedence mark when several descriptions fit.
For a tracked load, enter J160 in the waste-code field of the Queensland waste transport certificate. The generator fills in Part 1, the transporter Part 2 and the receiver Part 3. Lodge it online, by bulk upload or on numbered paper, whichever route is approved. The Queensland exclusions still apply.
What does Queensland J160 cover?
Tarry residue from refining, distillation or pyrolytic treatment falls here. Both the tar-like residue and the process it came from matter, so tar waste from elsewhere doesn't qualify by name alone.
- Official wording
- tarry residues arising from refining, distillation or any pyrolytic treatment

| Code | When it fits |
|---|---|
| J160 | The tarry residue came from refining, distillation or pyrolytic treatment. |
Where several descriptions fit, an asterisk in Queensland's tracking list decides which takes precedence. It is not an EWC hazardous-waste marker. A resource must meet its end-of-waste code or approval conditions before it leaves the waste regime.
