Western Australia
Chromium-free tannery waste
Western Australia K140: chromium must be absent; use D141 for chromium-bearing tannery waste.
Is WA K140 hazardous waste?
Not from the code alone. K140 is a WA controlled-waste category. Regulation 3 covers industrial, commercial, medical, laboratory and sewage-treatment waste, but not domestic waste. Waste lawfully accepted at a Class I, II or III landfill is excluded, except for specified items including asbestos, tyres and clinical waste.
For a tracked load, enter K140 in the controlled-waste category field on the DWER tracking form. DWER issues the number. The authorised carrier or driver records collection and transport, and the receiving facility closes the record. Record the holder, amount, containment and destination. Road tracking in WA follows the WA load thresholds and exclusions.
What does WA K140 cover?
Tannery waste falls here when it contains no chromium. That separates it from D141, the WA chromium-bearing tannery waste, and from any constituent classification that may also apply.

Is tannery waste WA K140 or D141?
| Code | When it fits |
|---|---|
| K140 | The waste came from a tannery and contains no chromium. |
| D141 | The WA tannery waste contains chromium. |
Landfill acceptance depends on the landfill criteria, not on how the waste looks. A category number and a dangerous goods class answer different questions.
